Humidifier Red Light On or Blinking? What It Means by Brand

The light is the humidifier's only way to tell you why it stopped. On most models it says one of three things.

Quick answer

On most humidifiers a red or orange light means the tank is empty or not sitting properly on the base: refill it, seat it and restart. A blinking red light on some warm-mist models means mineral scale on the heating element, which needs cleaning with white vinegar. On a few models a red light only means the room has not reached the humidity you set.

A portable humidifier protects itself in one main way: when it cannot find water, it stops and turns on a light. Warm-mist models do this because a heating element with no water around it would overheat. So the first meaning of a red light, on nearly every model, is “I have stopped because I think I am out of water.”

The catch is the word “think.” The humidifier judges the water level with a float or a sensor in the base. If the tank is not seated, the float is stuck or the parts are coated in scale, the light comes on with a full tank.

Warm-mist models hold very hot water. Turn the humidifier off, unplug it and let it cool before you lift the tank or touch the base. Vicks says to wait at least 20 minutes before cleaning a unit that has been running warm.

What the light means, by brand

These are the models whose makers publish the meaning. Colors and names differ between models from the same brand, so treat your own manual as the final word.

Brand and model What you see What it means What the maker says to do
Vicks Dual Comfort (VWC775) Reset light steady orange Tank empty, or tank removed Fill the tank and put it back on the base
Vicks Dual Comfort (VWC775) Reset light blinking red Mineral buildup on the heating element Follow the cleaning instructions
Vicks Warm Mist (V750) Refill light on Out of water Turn off, wait 15 minutes, refill, turn back on
Honeywell warm mist (HWM440, HWM445) Reset light on Out of water Turn off, add water, wait 5 minutes, turn on
Honeywell warm mist (HWM440, HWM445) Reset light still on after refilling Heating element may need cleaning Clean the heating element
Philips (HU4804, HU4805) Humidity light red Room has not reached the set humidity Nothing; it turns blue when the level is reached
Philips (HU4804, HU4805) Low-water light red Water level is low Refill

Clear it in this order

  1. Refill the tank.Safe check

Turn the humidifier off and unplug it. On a warm-mist model, give the heating element time to cool before you add water: Honeywell says 5 minutes for its HWM440 and HWM445, Vicks says 15 minutes for its V750. Use cool water.

  2. Seat the tank.Safe check

Set the tank squarely on the base and press it down. On the Vicks Dual Comfort the same orange light comes on whether the tank is empty or simply not on the base.

  3. Put it on a level surface.Safe check

Honeywell says the unit must be level for the float mechanism to work properly. A humidifier on a soft or sloping surface can read empty when it is not.

  4. Free the float.Safe check

The float is a small part in the base that rises with the water. Philips notes that the floating ball in its humidifiers can get stuck, and that you can free it by moving it with your hand. On Honeywell's warm-mist models the float must be pressed into place until you hear a soft click; Honeywell lists a float that is not installed correctly as the reason the unit keeps shutting down.

  5. Remove the scale.Safe check

If the light blinks red on a Vicks Dual Comfort, or stays on after refilling on a Honeywell warm-mist model, the heating element is coated in minerals. Vicks's method for the Dual Comfort: pour 2.5 cups of undiluted distilled white vinegar into the tank, set the tank on the base so the vinegar drains into the reservoir, and soak for 20 minutes. Then wipe the loosened minerals away with a soft cloth and rinse until the vinegar smell is gone. Do not put the base under water.

  6. Restart.Safe check

Plug it in and turn it on. A warm-mist model needs a short time to bring the water to a boil; Honeywell says to allow 1 minute on its HWM440 and HWM445 before expecting steam.

Red, but nothing is wrong

On Philips models HU4804 and HU4805 the humidity indicator is red whenever the room is below the humidity you set, and blue when it gets there. In a dry house in winter it can stay red for a long time. That is the humidifier working, not failing. If you are not sure what to set, see what humidity your house should be.

If the light will not clear

  • The tank is full, seated and level, the float moves, the base is clean, and the light is still on.
  • The light comes back within minutes of every restart.
  • There is water where it should not be, or the base is hot with no mist.

At that point the level sensor or the control has probably failed. Contact the maker with the model number and ask about the warranty. If yours makes no mist but shows no light at all, the causes are different: see a humidifier that is not working.

If the red light is on an air purifier instead, it usually means something else: see what a red light on an air purifier means.

Bottom lineRefill, seat the tank, level the unit and free the float. If a warm-mist model still shows red, or blinks red, descale the heating element with white vinegar. On some Philips models a red humidity light only means the room is still drier than your setting.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my humidifier light red when the tank is full?

The sensor that reads the water level is not seeing the water. Check that the tank is seated on the base, that the float moves freely and clicks into place, and that the heating element is not coated in scale. Honeywell says that if the reset light stays on after refilling, the heating element may need cleaning.

What does a blinking red light on a Vicks humidifier mean?

On the Vicks Dual Comfort (VWC775), a reset light that blinks red means mineral buildup on the heating element, and the fix is to clean it. A steady orange light on the same model means the tank is empty or has been removed.

How do I reset the red light on my humidifier?

On warm-mist models, turn it off, let the heating element cool, refill, and turn it back on. Vicks says to wait 15 minutes on its V750; Honeywell says 5 minutes on its HWM440 and HWM445. Check your model's manual for its own wait time.

Why does my Philips humidifier show a red light?

Philips models HU4804 and HU4805 have two indicators. The humidity light is red when the room has not reached the level you set and blue when it has. A separate red light means low water.

Is it safe to keep running a humidifier with the red light on?

The light normally means the humidifier has already stopped making mist to protect itself. Do not keep restarting it without fixing the cause. Refill it, clean it if the light returns, and contact the maker if it will not clear.
