Dehumidifier Not Collecting Water? Settings, Cold Rooms and Frozen Coils
An empty bucket is not always a broken dehumidifier. These machines need warm, humid air to pull water from, and in a cool basement or a dry winter house there may be little to collect.
Quick answer
Check the bucket is seated and empty, the humidity setting is below the room’s actual humidity, and the filter and grilles are clear. Dehumidifiers work poorly below about 41°F (5°C), where the coil frosts, and collect little when the air is already near 40% humidity. Light frost that melts within an hour is normal. If the room is warm and humid but the coil never gets cold, the compressor needs service.

A dehumidifier is a small refrigerator turned inside out. A fan pulls room air over a cold coil; moisture condenses on the coil like on a cold glass and drips into the bucket; then the air passes over a warm coil and goes back into the room slightly warmer and drier. Two things decide how much water it collects: how humid the air is and how warm it is.
When an empty bucket is normal
- The air is already dry. Frigidaire notes that when a room is below about 40% relative humidity, and especially when it is cool, there is little water to extract. The goal is comfortable humidity, not a full bucket.
- It has reached its setting. If the humidistat is set to 50% and the room is at 48%, the compressor stays off and only the fan may run.
- It is just getting started in a damp space. GE says a very humid room can take three or four days of continuous running before the unit reaches and holds its target.
Quick checks
- Empty and reseat the bucket.
A full or slightly misaligned bucket trips the full-bucket switch, which stops the compressor while the fan may keep running.
- Set the humidity below the room’s current level.
Frigidaire recommends 40% to 60%. Start high and lower it day by day until the space feels comfortable.
- Clean the filter and clear the grilles.
Restricted airflow cuts collection and promotes frost. GE suggests about 18 inches of space on all sides.
- Check the room temperature.
Standard dehumidifiers work poorly below about 41°F (5°C). In a cold basement, the coil frosts and the unit spends much of its time defrosting.
- Use low fan speed in cool, drier rooms.
Frigidaire says low speed lets air reach a lower dew point on the coil, so more water condenses. High speed helps in warm, very humid rooms.
- If you use a hose drain,
make sure it runs downhill without kinks, and the bucket or plug is set up for hose draining as the manual describes.
Frost and ice on the coils
| What you see | Normal? | Cause and fix |
|---|---|---|
| Light frost when first started that melts within 30 to 60 minutes | Yes | Normal; frost control cycles the compressor off to melt it (GE) |
| Frost that comes back often in a cool room | Expected below about 41°F | Warm the space, or use a model rated for low temperatures |
| Heavy ice that does not melt | No | Dirty filter, blocked airflow, or a refrigerant problem |
| Coil never gets cold, no water in a humid room | No | Compressor, start component or refrigerant leak: technician |
Frigidaire notes the coil runs close to freezing in normal operation, and that restricted airflow or an imbalanced system can lower coil temperature further and keep ice from melting.
A simple test: set the humidity to the lowest setting in a warm room. After it has run for a while, the air coming out should feel slightly warm and the coil behind the filter should feel cold. If the air is not warmer and the coil is not cold, the compressor is not running.
When to repair or replace
If the compressor does not run, or runs without the coil getting cold, the sealed system has failed. On most portable dehumidifiers, that repair costs close to a new unit. InterNACHI’s typical life for a dehumidifier is about 8 years; the repair or replace calculator helps you decide.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my dehumidifier running but not collecting water?
The most common reasons are that the air is already fairly dry, the room is too cold, the coil has frosted over, the filter or grilles are blocked, or the bucket is not seated so the unit thinks it is full. If the room is warm and humid, the coils feel room temperature while it runs and nothing collects, the sealed refrigeration system may have failed.
Is frost on my dehumidifier coils normal?
Light frost is normal, especially when the unit first starts or in a cool room. GE says it should disappear within 30 to 60 minutes as the unit’s frost control cycles the compressor off. Heavy ice that does not melt points to a cold room, restricted airflow or a refrigerant problem.
What humidity should I set my dehumidifier to?
Frigidaire recommends 40% to 60% relative humidity. Start at the upper end and lower it gradually until the space feels comfortable. Running in continuous mode for long periods is meant only for very humid conditions.
How cold is too cold for a dehumidifier?
GE and Frigidaire both give about 41°F (5°C) as the lower limit for standard models; below that the evaporator coil freezes and the unit may defrost as often as once an hour. Some models are rated for low-temperature operation; check your manual.
How long does a dehumidifier take to dry a damp basement?
In a very humid space, GE says a dehumidifier may run continually for three or four days before it reaches and holds the target humidity. After that it should cycle on and off.
