Air Purifier Red Light On? Filter Reminder or Poor Air, by Brand
Air purifiers use red for two unrelated messages. One is a calendar reminder that knows nothing about your filter. The other is a live reading of the air in the room. Work out which one you are looking at before you buy a filter.
Quick answer
A red light on an air purifier means one of two things. A small red filter light is usually a timer reminder to check or replace the filter, and it stays on until you reset it, even after a new filter goes in. A red ring or color bar is the air quality sensor reading poor air, and it changes back on its own when the air clears.

Before you do anything, look at where the red is.
- A small light next to a word or icon such as Check Filter, Filter or Reset is a maintenance reminder. On the models below it runs on a timer that counts hours of use.
- A ring, a bar or a glowing grille that changes color is the air quality indicator. It is driven by a sensor and changes back on its own when the air improves.
The fixes are completely different, so this one look saves buying a filter you do not need.
What red means, by brand
| Brand and model | What you see | What it means | What the maker says to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Levoit (most models) | Check Filter indicator on | Timer reminder after running hours, usually 6 to 8 months of typical use | Check the filter, replace it if worn, then reset the indicator |
| Levoit models with a sensor | Red ring around or on the display | Smoke, dust or cooking odors in the room right now | Nothing to reset; it turns blue or green as the air clears |
| Coway Airmega 250 | Red air quality light | Very unhealthy air, the worst of its colors | Let Auto mode run; the fan speeds up on its own |
| Coway Airmega 100 | Purple, not red, is its worst color | Orange is bad, purple very bad | Same as above |
| Coway Airmega with a filter light | Filter indicator on | Time to replace the filters | Replace them, then press the reset button |
| Honeywell HPA830 (Designer Series) | Red air quality light | Poor air: an elevated level of VOCs | Let it run; it can take a few minutes to calibrate after start-up |
| Honeywell HPA830 | Filter Check light solid | Pre-filter due, every 3 months | Replace the pre-filter and reset the light |
| Honeywell HPA830 | Filter Check light blinking every 2 seconds | HEPA filter due, every 12 months | Replace the HEPA filter and reset the light |
| Honeywell HPA020 | Check Filter light on | Reminder based on hours of use | Check or replace, then hold Filter Reset about 2 seconds |
Colors and timings vary between models of the same brand, as the Coway rows show. The legend printed on the unit or in its manual is the final word.
If it is the filter light
- Unplug the purifier and open it.Safe check
Coway’s routine starts with unplugging the unit. Take out the filter and look at it.
- Decide whether the filter is really worn.Safe check
Levoit’s signs that it is: a grayish, matted look, a musty smell or weaker airflow. If the filter still looks fine, Levoit says resetting the timer and using it a while longer is reasonable. Homes with pets or more dust wear filters out sooner.
- Clean the pre-filter, if there is one.Safe check
Coway calls its Airmega pre-filters washable. Check your manual before you wash any other filter.
- Put the filter back properly.Safe check
Levoit lists a filter that is not fully seated, or a cover that is not latched, as a reason the light stays on.
- Reset the light.Safe check
With the unit plugged in and on, hold the filter or reset button. Levoit gives about 3 seconds on its Core 300-P and a recessed button held for 5 seconds on the LV-PUR131; Honeywell’s HPA020 manual says about 2 seconds. Smart Levoit models can be reset in the VeSync app.
- Still on?Safe check
Levoit suggests unplugging for a minute or two and trying again with a steady press, then the manual’s factory reset or the maker’s support line.
If it is the air quality light
A red air quality light is the purifier doing its job. Leave it on Auto, where models such as the Coway Airmega 250 raise the fan speed by themselves, and give it time. Levoit lists smoke, dust and cooking odors as things that turn its ring red.
If it stays red in clean air, clean the sensor. Coway recommends opening the sensor cover and removing dust with a cotton swab or soft brush about once every two months. Levoit suggests wiping the sensor area with a soft, dry cloth. On the Honeywell HPA830, give it a few minutes after switching on: the manual says it calibrates at start-up.
The air quality sensor is not a gas or carbon monoxide alarm. The sensors on these models read particles (the Coway Airmega 100 uses a PM2.5 sensor) or VOCs (the Honeywell HPA830). If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 or the gas company from outside. See what a carbon monoxide alarm’s beeps mean.
Related lights and air problems
Humidifiers use red differently, usually for an empty tank: see what a red light on a humidifier means. If the air feels stuffy or damp rather than dusty, the problem may be humidity, not particles: what humidity your house should be gives the target range, and condensation on windows is the usual first sign it is too high.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my air purifier light red?
Either the filter reminder has come on, or the air quality sensor is reading poor air. On Levoit and Honeywell models the filter reminder is based on running time. On Coway and Honeywell models with a sensor, red is the worst or near-worst air quality color.
Why is the red light still on after I changed the filter?
The filter reminder is a timer and does not know the filter was changed. Levoit says replacing the filter does not clear the countdown, so the light needs a manual reset, usually by holding a filter or reset button for a few seconds. Honeywell’s HPA020 manual says the light stays on until it is reset.
Can I keep using the purifier with the red light on?
Levoit says its filter light does not stop the unit from running, though performance can drop if the filter really is worn out, and that a red air quality ring only reflects current conditions. Check the filter before deciding whether to replace it.
My air quality light is always red. Is the sensor broken?
Dust on the sensor can throw off the reading. Coway recommends cleaning the sensor with a cotton swab or soft brush about every two months, and Levoit suggests wiping the sensor area with a soft, dry cloth. Honeywell notes that its HPA830 takes a few minutes after start-up to calibrate.
