Washing Machine Not Draining? How to Empty It and Find the Clog
A washer that will not drain is rarely a dead pump. It is more often a sock in the pump filter, a hose shoved against the wall, or a detergent dose that made a wall of suds.
Quick answer
Cancel the cycle and run Drain & Spin. If the water stays, check that the lid or door is fully latched, the drain hose is not kinked or pinched behind the machine, and you did not use too much detergent. On a front loader, drain the water through the small hose behind the bottom-front panel and clean the drain pump filter: it is the most common clog. A pump that hums but moves no water is jammed or failing.

At the end of each wash and rinse, a small pump at the bottom of the washer pushes the water up the drain hose and into a standpipe, a laundry sink or a floor drain. The washer will not spin until the tub is empty, so anything that blocks the drain also stops the spin. Most of the causes are things you can see and clear yourself.
The quick checks
- Cancel and run Drain & Spin.
If the washer was interrupted mid-cycle, a plain drain cycle may be all it needs.
- Close the lid or door firmly.
The lid lock or door switch has to confirm the machine is shut before it will drain and spin. Check for clothing caught in the door seal or a broken latch.
- Check the drain hose behind the machine.
Pull the washer out a few inches. The hose should not be kinked, crushed against the wall or clogged. Straighten it and reattach it to the standpipe with the U-shaped hose form.
- Look for suds.
Too much detergent, or non-HE detergent in an HE machine, can make enough foam to stop the pump. Run a rinse with no detergent.
- Rebalance the load.
A single heavy item (a bath mat, a comforter) or an overloaded drum can make the washer stop to protect itself. Spread the load evenly or remove some of it.
- Check the spin setting.
Delicate and hand-wash cycles use slow spins and leave clothes wetter. That is normal.
Clean the drain pump filter (front loaders)
Most front-load washers, and some top loaders, have a drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front. It catches coins, hair ties, socks and lint before they reach the pump. GE and Maytag both point to it as a common cause of slow or no draining.
- Unplug the washer.
Lay towels down and set a baking dish or shallow pan in front of the panel. There may be several gallons of water in the drum.
- Drain through the small tube first.
Next to the filter, many models have a short drain tube with a cap. Pull it out, uncap it over the pan and let the water run out in stages.
- Unscrew the filter slowly.
Turn it counterclockwise a little at a time; more water will come out.
- Clean it and the opening.
Remove lint and objects, rinse the filter, and look into the opening for anything stuck on the pump impeller. You should be able to see or feel it turn freely.
- Reinstall tightly and test.
Screw the filter in fully, close the drain tube, and run Drain & Spin while watching for leaks.
Find the problem by the symptom
| What happens | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Water stays, washer is silent at drain time | Lid or door not latched, failed lid lock, or a control fault | Close firmly; if it persists, service |
| Water stays, pump hums | Pump jammed by an object, or a failing pump | Clean the pump filter; then service |
| Drains slowly, then stops | Partly clogged filter, hose or standpipe | Clean the filter; flush the hose; clear the standpipe |
| Drains, but water comes back into the drum | Standpipe too tall, or a clogged house drain backing up | Check standpipe height; clear the drain |
| Drains while filling | Siphoning: hose too far into the standpipe or sealed in | Reposition the hose; leave an air gap |
| Stops before spin; clothes soaking | Unbalanced load or too many suds | Rebalance; rinse with no detergent |
| Error code on the display | Drain or lock fault detected by the control | Look up the code in your manual |
Check the standpipe and house drain
The washer’s pump can only push water so high. Maytag specifies a standpipe between 30 and 96 inches tall; above that, water can flow back into the drum. If the standpipe or laundry sink drains slowly with the washer off (try pouring a bucket of water into it), the clog is in the house plumbing, not the washer. Lint from washer water builds up in those drains over time; a plumber can clear it, and a lint trap on the hose outlet helps prevent it.
Unplug before reaching in. Do not reach into a washer drum or pump opening while the machine is plugged in, and keep electrical cords out of standing water around the machine.
When to call a technician
If the filter and hose are clear, the lid latches, and the washer still will not drain, the drain pump, lid lock or control has likely failed. A drain pump is usually one of the more affordable washer repairs. InterNACHI gives washers a 5 to 15 year life; on an older machine, the repair or replace calculator can help you decide. Standing water left in a washer for days also leads to odors; see why a washing machine smells.
Frequently asked questions
How do I drain a front-load washer that is full of water?
Turn it off and unplug it. Open the small access panel at the bottom front, lay down towels and set a shallow pan in front. Most models have a short drain tube next to the pump filter: pull it out, remove its cap and let the water run into the pan, emptying the pan as needed. Then slowly unscrew the filter, expecting more water.
Why will my washer not drain or spin?
A washer will not spin until the water is out, so a drain problem looks like a spin problem. Also check for an unbalanced or overloaded drum, a gentle cycle with a slow spin, too many suds, and a lid or door that is not latched.
Can too much detergent stop a washer from draining?
Yes. Too much detergent, or regular detergent in a high-efficiency washer, makes enough suds to keep the pump from moving water. Run a rinse and drain cycle with no detergent, then measure carefully and use HE detergent in HE machines.
My washer drains while it is still filling. Why?
That is siphoning: the drain hose is pushed too far down the standpipe or sealed into it with no air gap, so water runs out by gravity. Pull the hose up so it hooks into the top of the standpipe with the U-shaped hose form, and do not tape it airtight.
How long do washing machines last?
InterNACHI gives a range of 5 to 15 years. A drain pump is one of the cheaper washer repairs, so it is often worth fixing on a machine in otherwise good shape.
