Refrigerator Not Cooling? What to Check Before You Call for Repair
A refrigerator does not make cold; it moves heat out of the box and releases it through coils near the floor. Anything that slows that flow, inside or outside, shows up as a warm fridge.
Quick answer
Check the setting first, since controls get bumped, and give changes 24 hours. Then vacuum the condenser coils behind the base grille, keep food off the vents inside, check the door gaskets seal, and leave about 1/2 inch at the sides and 1 inch behind. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, or nothing is cold and the compressor clicks, a fan, defrost part or compressor needs service.

Inside a refrigerator, refrigerant absorbs heat from the air at a cold coil, usually behind a panel in the freezer. The compressor pumps that heat to the condenser coils, typically underneath or on the back, where a small fan blows it into the kitchen. Fans inside move cold air from the freezer into the fresh-food section. A warm fridge means heat is not getting out, cold air is not getting around, or warm air is getting in.
Before anything else, put an appliance thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf and read it after a few hours. The FDA’s target is 40°F (4°C) or below. See what temperature a refrigerator should be for the settings.
Eight checks, in order
- Check the controls.
Settings get bumped by hands and groceries. Whirlpool presets controls to the middle setting. Change one step at a time and wait 24 hours before judging the result.
- Make sure it has power and is not in a demo or showroom mode.
Lights on but no cooling can mean a demo mode left on from the store; your manual explains how to turn it off.
- Clean the condenser coils.
Unplug the fridge, remove the base grille (often two screws) and vacuum the grille, the area behind it and the coil surface with a soft brush. Whirlpool says dusty, greasy or pet-heavy homes may need this as often as every other month.
- Give it room to breathe.
Whirlpool calls for about 1/2 inch of clearance at the sides and 1 inch at the back, no blocked base grille, and no oven or radiator next to it.
- Unblock the vents inside.
Cold air enters from vents on the back wall and returns near the bottom. Packed shelves or a box against a vent stop the circulation.
- Check the door seals.
Close the door on a sheet of paper; it should resist when you pull it out. Clean gaskets with warm, soapy water. Maytag also recommends checking that the fridge is level, because a slight tilt can keep doors from sealing.
- Limit warm loads and door openings.
A big grocery run or long door openings can take several hours to recover from, Whirlpool notes.
- Look and listen for the fans.
With the door open and the light switch pressed, you can usually hear the freezer fan. At the back, the condenser fan should spin while the compressor runs (unplug before touching anything).
What the symptoms point to
| Symptom | Likely cause | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Both sections slightly warm, coils dusty | Dirty condenser coils, poor clearance | You |
| Fridge warm, freezer cold | Blocked vents, evaporator fan, damper or defrost problem | You (vents); technician (fan, defrost) |
| Frost covering the back wall of the freezer | Defrost heater, sensor or timer failed | Technician |
| Nothing cold, compressor silent, clicking every few minutes | Start relay or compressor problem | Technician |
| Compressor runs, condenser fan does not spin | Failed condenser fan | Technician |
| Warm only in a garage in winter or summer | Outside the room temperature range the fridge is built for | Move it, or use a garage-rated model |
| Water or condensation inside, warm spots | Door seal leaks or door left ajar | You (clean or replace gasket) |
Whirlpool lists the evaporator fan, condenser fan, compressor and start relay as internal parts best left to a professional.
Protect the food while you troubleshoot. Move perishables to a cooler with ice if the fridge is above 40°F for more than a short time, and keep the freezer door shut. When in doubt about anything that has been warm, throw it out.
A clicking sound with no cooling
A refrigerator that clicks every few minutes while staying warm often has a compressor that is trying to start and shutting itself off. That pattern is explained in why a refrigerator clicks. It usually needs a technician to test the start relay and compressor.
Repair or replace?
Coil cleaning, door gaskets and fans are modest repairs. A compressor or sealed-system leak on an older refrigerator often costs more than it is worth. The repair or replace calculator compares the repair to the fridge’s remaining life, and the energy cost calculator shows what an old, inefficient model is costing you to run.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my fridge not cold enough?
First measure it: the FDA says to keep the refrigerator at or below 40°F, and an appliance thermometer is the best way to know. If it is warmer, Whirlpool says the controls come preset to the mid setting and that you should wait at least 24 hours between adjustments. Then check that the fridge is not packed so tightly that air cannot circulate, that it is not next to an oven or other heat source, and that the condenser coils are clean.
Why is my freezer cold but my refrigerator warm?
In most frost-free refrigerators, the cold is made in the freezer and a fan blows it into the fresh-food section through a vent or damper. If the evaporator fan has stopped, the vent is blocked by food, or frost has built up on the evaporator coil because the defrost system failed, the freezer stays cold while the refrigerator warms up. Clear the vents first; a fan or defrost failure needs a technician.
How often should I clean refrigerator coils?
Whirlpool says coils may need cleaning as often as every other month in greasy or dusty homes or homes with pets, and Maytag suggests every two to three months in those conditions. Unplug the fridge, remove the base grille, and vacuum the coils with a soft brush attachment.
My new refrigerator is not cold yet. Is that normal?
Yes, for the first day. Whirlpool says to allow 24 hours for a newly installed refrigerator to reach proper temperatures. Check that packaging is removed and the doors close fully.
Is food safe if my fridge stopped cooling?
Use an appliance thermometer. The FDA says the refrigerator should be at or below 40°F; perishable food that has been above that for an extended time may not be safe. When in doubt, throw it out.
Can a refrigerator in the garage stop cooling?
Yes. Whirlpool designs its standard refrigerators for rooms between 55°F and 110°F. In a cold garage, the fridge may run too little and warm up; in a very hot one, it may not keep up. Use a model rated for garages if it will sit outside that range.
